The sound-producing organ of insects consists of a specialized file-like part on the body wall and a friction piece that protrudes from the other body parts adjacent to it. In grasshoppers, the differentiation of the file-like part and the friction piece is not so obvious, and they produce a simple sound by rubbing the thickened part of the forewing with a row of tiny projections on the inside of the hind leg femur. Male crickets and grasshoppers have highly developed friction apparatus on their wings, allowing them to produce unique and beautiful songs. In crickets, the right forewing is placed on top and the left forewing is placed underneath, and when singing, the two forewings are raised at various angles and the file-like part engraved along the vein on the underside of the right forewing is rubbed with the friction piece on the rear edge of the left forewing.
