Cannabaceae - Asaka

Dicotyledonous, polypetalous. A climbing perennial or an upright annual. The leaves are simple or palmately compound with stipules. Dioecious. Male flowers have five perianths and five paired stamens. Female flowers have a single pistil surrounded by a single large bract, and the perianth is inconspicuous. The fruit is an achene. There are two genera and three species; in Japan, Lupinus lupulus grows wild, while hops and hemp are also known.

In the past, plants such as lupin, hops, and hemp were classified as part of the Mulberry family, but in the APG classification, they are now classified as part of the Cannabaceae family along with Zelkova, Chinese hackberry, and Japanese hackberry. Therefore, both herbaceous and woody plants are included. There are about 260 species in 10 genera around the world, mainly in the temperate and tropical zones of the Northern Hemisphere, and 9 species in 4 genera are found in Japan.

双子葉植物、離弁花類。つる性の多年草または直立する一年草。葉は単生または掌状複葉で托葉(たくよう)がある。雌雄異株。雄花は、5枚の花被(かひ)と、それと対をなす5本の雄しべからなる。雌花は、1本の雌しべが1枚の大きな包葉に包まれ、花被は目だたない。果実は痩果(そうか)。2属3種あり、日本にはカラハナソウが野生するほか、ホップとアサが知られる。

　かつてはカラハナソウやホップ、アサなどはクワ科に分類されていたが、APG分類では、ムクノキ、エノキ、ウラジロエノキなどとともにアサ科に分類された。そのため、草本と木本のどちらも含まれる。北半球の温帯から熱帯を中心に世界に10属約260種あり、日本には4属9種が分布する。
