Higashiyama
[1] A hilly mountain range that stretches especially along the eastern edge of Kyoto City. Its main peak is Nyoigadake (470 meters). Its gentle shape, along with the Kamo River, is well-known as a representative example of Kyoto's natural beauty. Since ancient times, it has been a strategic military location for protecting Kyoto, and since the Heian period, it has also been known as a villa site for aristocrats. At the foot of the mountain are Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Chion-in Temple. The 36 peaks of Higashiyama. *The Heike clan (early 13th century) abbot's chant: "Kenreimon-in was established at the foot of Higashiyama, near Yoshida." [2] One of the administrative districts of Kyoto City. The area is sandwiched between the southern part of Higashiyama and the Kamo River, and occupies the southeastern part of the traditional Kyoto city area. It was separated from Kamigyo Ward in 1929 ( Showa 4 ). In 1931, Yamashina Town, Uji County, was incorporated, and in 1951, it was divided into Yamashina Ward. There are shrines and temples such as Chion-in Temple, Yasaka Shrine, Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Tofuku-ji Temple, and Sanjusangendo Temple, as well as Gion, Kyoto's most famous entertainment district.

[一] 特に京都市の東縁に連なる丘陵性の山地。主峰は如意ケ岳(にょいがだけ)(四七〇メートル)。その温和な山容は鴨川とともに京都の自然美の代表的なものとして親しまれている。古来、京都を守る軍事上の要地となり、平安時代以降は、貴族の別荘地としても知られた。ふもとに清水寺・知恩院などがある。東山三六峰。※平家(13C前)灌頂「建礼門院は、東山の麓、吉田の辺なる所にぞ立いらせ給ひける」[二] 京都市の行政区の一つ。東山の南部と鴨川にはさまれた地域で、古くからの京都市街地の東南部を占める。昭和四年(一九二九)上京区から分離して新設された。同六年に宇治郡山科町を編入したが、山科区として同五一年に分区。知恩院・八坂神社・清水寺・東福寺・三十三間堂などの社寺があり、京都の代表的な花街の祇園がある。
