Shankugai (English spelling) chank shell

A snail shell of the family Oncotrichum, class Gastropoda, phylum Mollusca. It is found on the west coast of India and Sri Lanka. It is thick and heavy, reaching a shell height of 15 cm and a shell diameter of about 10 cm. It has a short spindle shape. The shell is white, but when raw it is covered with a thick olive-colored shell skin. The shell opening is slightly narrow and spindle-shaped, and the axis lip has four folds. It is revered as a sacred shell in Hinduism, and statues of the god Vishnu always hold it in their hands. The rare deformed left-handed specimens are especially highly valued, and are considered to be equivalent in value to the same weight of the shell in gold. It is also placed in Buddhist pagodas, and it is believed that water drawn with this shell will bring about miracles that cure illnesses. Also, because the shell is thick, it is sliced into rings and used as jewelry.
