Higashiyama Kaii

Japanese painter. Born in Yokohama on July 8, 1908. Real name Shinkichi. Graduated from Tokyo School of Fine Arts (the predecessor of Tokyo University of the Arts) in 1931 (Showa 6) and continued his research, studying in Germany from 1933 to 1935. At the 3rd Nitten Exhibition in 1947 (Showa 22), his work "Afterglow" was selected as a special prize. He became a judge in 1950, and received the Japan Art Academy Prize in 1956 for his work "Twilight" exhibited at the 11th Nitten Exhibition. In 1965, he became a member of the Japan Art Academy and a director of the Nitten Exhibition, and in 1969, he was awarded the Order of Culture. In 1974, he became the chairman of the Nitten Exhibition. During this time, he completed the murals for the Togu Palace, "The Sun, Moon and Four Seasons," in 1960, and the murals for the new Imperial Palace, "The Tide at Dawn," in 1968, and received the Mainichi Art Grand Prize the following year. He also worked on the creation of the partition paintings for the Toshodaiji Temple Miei Hall from 1973, which he completed in 1981. In 1987, he donated his own works from his collection to Nagano Prefecture. In 1990, the Nagano Prefectural Shinano Art Museum, Higashiyama Kaii Museum, which holds his works, was opened in the prefecture. He was an excellent writer and author of many books, including "The Mountains and Rivers of My Wanderings" and "Dialogue with the Landscape." He passed away on May 6, 1999.

日本画家。明治41年7月8日横浜に生まれる。本名新吉。1931年(昭和6)東京美術学校(東京芸大の前身)を卒業して研究科に進み、33年から35年までドイツに留学。47年(昭和22)の第3回日展で『残照』が特選。50年から審査員となり、第11回日展出品作『光昏(こうこん)』で56年に日本芸術院賞を受ける。65年には日本芸術院会員、日展理事となり、69年に文化勲章を受章。74年に日展理事長となった。この間、60年に東宮御所壁画『日月四季図』、68年には皇居新宮殿壁画『朝明けの潮(うしお)』を完成させ、翌年毎日芸術大賞を受ける。また73年から唐招提寺御影(とうしょうだいじみえい)堂障壁画の制作に携わり、81年にこれを完成させた。87年に所蔵していた自作を長野県に寄贈。90年(平成2)には、同県にそれらを所蔵した長野県信濃美術館・東山魁夷館が開館した。文章をよくし、『わが遍歴の山河』『風景との対話』など著書多数がある。平成11年5月6日死去。
