A general term for the Lepidoptera moths of the Noctuidae family. There are many species, with over 20,000 species found worldwide and about 1,000 species in Japan. They measure 10-200mm when spread. The larvae are generally hairless or have coarse hairs, enlarge to a cylindrical shape, and feed on plant leaves. Most adults are nocturnal, preferring sap and fruit juice, and are attracted to lights. The turnip cutworm moth, armyworm moth, rice armyworm moth, armyworm moth, and Akebia leaf moth are well known as pests.

鱗翅(りんし)目ヤガ科の総称。種類が多く,全世界に2万余種,日本にも約1000種を産する。大きさは開張10〜200mm。幼虫は一般に無毛,または粗毛があり,円筒形で肥大し,植物の葉を食害する。成虫の多くは夜行性,樹液や果汁を好み,灯火にもよくくる。カブラヤガ,アワヨトウ,イネヨトウ,ヨトウガ,アケビコノハなどは害虫として著名。
