Brown thrush (akahara)

Japanese: アカハラ(赤腹) - アカハラ（英語表記）brown thrush

A passerine bird of the flycatcher family (illustration). Total length is about 23 cm. The upper part of the body is dark green-brown, and the chest, belly, and sides are a beautiful reddish fox color, hence the name. Females are paler overall than males, and often have white areas on their throats. They are found in Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands, and Japan, and those from the north migrate south in winter to hibernate. They live in bright forests such as larch forests, and while hopping around on the ground, they search for and eat earthworms and insects. In the season when nuts of Japanese laurel, mistletoe, rowan, and other trees ripen, they also pick them from the trees and eat them.

スズメ目ヒタキ科の鳥(イラスト)。全長約23cm。体上面は暗緑褐色，胸から腹，脇にかけて赤みがかった美しいキツネ色をしているのでこの名がある。雌は雄よりも全体に淡く，のどに白色部があることが多い。サハリン，千島，日本に分布しており，冬には北方のものは南下して越冬する。カラマツ林などの明るい林にすみ，地上をピョンピョンはねながら，ミミズや昆虫を探し出して食べる。ズミ，ヤドリギ，ナナカマドなどの木の実がなる季節には，樹上でそれらもとって食べる。
