Jules Malou

Belgian politician. After 1841 he became a Roman Catholic member of parliament, and served as governor of Antwerp (1844-45), minister of finance (1845-47), and president of Société Générale (1848-71). Malou and others felt threatened by the anti-clerical and liberal tendencies of the Liberal Party, which was formed in 1846 and took power the following year, and so worked to unify and organize the Catholic forces that had been divided since the 1950s. In 1870 he became minister without portfolio in the Catholic cabinet of Danetan, and later formed a Catholic cabinet with de Theu (1871-78), and as minister of finance he worked hard on such matters as building railways.

ベルギーの政治家。1841年以後ローマ･カトリック教会派の国会議員となり，アントウェルペン州知事(1844‐45)，大蔵大臣(1845‐47)，ソシエテ･ジェネラル総裁(1848‐71)を歴任。46年結成され，翌年政権を獲得した自由党の反教権的･自由主義的傾向に危機感を強めたマルーらは，50年代から分裂しているカトリック勢力の統一と組織化に努力した。70年カトリック派のダネタン内閣の無任所大臣となり，さらにド･テウとともにカトリック内閣を組織し(1871‐78)，大蔵大臣として鉄道敷設などに尽くした。
