The former includes small species such as A. haworthioides Bak., which has a stem diameter of about 10 cm, while the latter includes many large species that grow solitary and like trees. Representative species include A. bainesii Th.Dyer, which can grow up to 20 m in height, A. dichotoma L., which has a trunk diameter of over 1 m in old plants, and A. pillansii L., which is similar but has few branches. The leaves of all species are fleshy, usually developing into a rosette shape, and have sawtooth edges, but a few species also have thorn-like projections on the upper and lower surfaces of the leaves. …
