A village in Shimoina County in southern Nagano Prefecture. Population 4,004 (1995). Located at the southern end of the Ina Basin, on the west bank of the midstream of the Tenryu River, it borders Iida City to the north. The slope spreads from the western mountain range to the east, and National Route 151 (Enshu Kaido) runs north-south through the center. The main industry is agriculture, with rice cultivation, sericulture, livestock farming and greenhouse horticulture being carried out, but in recent years, farmers have been taking on more side jobs, and the number of people commuting to Iida City and other areas has been increasing. The area is home to the remains of Yoshioka Castle, owned by the Shimojo clan, who ruled over the area during the Sengoku period, Oyamada Shrine, which has a shrine building designated as an Important Cultural Property, and Chikada Plateau, and is part of the Tenryu-Okumikawa Quasi-National Park.
