Academia dei Lincei - Academia dei Lincei

…The Italian academies that sprang up in the late 15th and 16th centuries were mostly founded by humanist assemblies, and pioneered the cutting edge of academics of the time, placing emphasis on the study of the classics as well as natural sciences. The most famous of these was the Accademia dei Lincei in Rome, to which Galileo belonged, founded in 1603 by Federico Cesi. It disappeared with his death in 1630, but was revived in the 18th century and is still in existence today in various forms. …

From the academic conference:

...On the other hand, academic societies that rely on specialized fields that have outlived their usefulness or on paradigms that have lost their validity are forced to become rigid and outdated, and in some cases may even disappear.
[Establishment of the Society]
There is much debate among historians about the origins of academic societies, but the Accademia dei Lincei, founded in Rome in 1603 under the patronage of Federico Cesi (1585-1630), is generally considered to be the forerunner of modern academic societies. Galileo was also a member of this academy, but its activities ceased around 1630 with the death of its patron.
