Also known as Dendenmushi (breathworm) or Maimai (snail). A general term for a group of land snails belonging to Pulmonata. Most have right-handed shells, and their bodies are always moist with mucus. A mesh of blood vessels runs through the mantle cavity wall, acting as lungs. When dry, they shrink their body into the shell and put a thin membrane over the opening of the shell. They are hermaphroditic. Many lay eggs in the soil. The most representative species in the Kanto region are the Misuji snail and the Left-handed snail, while the Red-lipped snail and the Western snail are representative in the Kansai region. The Onajima snail and the Usukawa snail are found throughout Japan, where they damage vegetables and other crops. → African snail/Escargot
