A Malaysian state occupying the northwestern part of Borneo. Together with Sabah, it forms East Malaysia. The Upper Kapuas Mountains and the Iran Mountains run along the border with Indonesia from the south to the east, and the north is a plain facing the South China Sea. About 70% of the land is tropical rainforest, and the coast is mangrove swamps. The main products are pepper, timber (mainly exported to Japan), and oil from the Miri oil field, as well as gold and bauxite. In 1841, the King of Brunei gave it to the Englishman J. Brooke, who put down the Kuching rebellion, as a fief, and the Brooke family continued to rule it. In 1888, it became a British protectorate, and after Japanese occupation, it became a British colony in 1946, and in 1963 it became a state of the Federation of Malaysia. The inhabitants are mainly Iban (Sea Dayak) and Chinese, with some Malays as well. In recent years, environmental destruction has become a problem, such as the threat to the lives of indigenous people who make a living by slash-and-burn agriculture due to the deforestation of tropical rainforests. The capital is Kuching. 124,450km2 . 2,071,506 people (2000). → Related topics Kuching | Brook | Brunei | Borneo [island] | Malaysia Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
