In the early Edo period, during the heyday of red seal ship trade, wealthy Japanese merchants lent funds to overseas trading ships. This was a highly speculative scheme, with the ship and cargo as collateral, and the borrower was not obligated to repay the loan in the event of shipwreck at sea, but in return the interest rate was high, ranging from 35% to 110%. After the travel ban on Japanese ships in 1635, the amount of bank loans given to Portuguese and Chinese people increased, but due to the isolation of Japan, the loans became impossible to recover, dealing a major blow to Japanese merchants.
