Yorii was the base of the Inomata clan, one of the seven clans of Musashi, and medieval samurai descended from them, such as Fujita, Yamazaki, Sakurazawa, Iizuka, Yodo, and Obusuma, who were based in the surrounding area. In 1476 (Bunmei 8), Nagao Kageharu, a vassal of Kanto Kanrei Uesugi Akimasa, built Hachigata Castle on the right bank of the Arakawa River and rebelled against his lord, but was soon attacked by Ota Sukenaga (Dokan) and forced to retreat.
