A type of stringed instrument. It is a unique bowed instrument that appeared in the 17th century, combining the functions of the viola da gamba and the playing technique of the violin with the addition of sympathetic strings, an idea that originated in the East. The violin and viola already existed, so it is not a predecessor to these instruments. It has six or seven main strings and a wide variety of tunings, including major and minor thirds, perfect fourths, and perfect fifths, and often forms the tonic chord of the piece. The body of the instrument is a viola da gamba, but it has no frets and is held and bowed in the same way as a violin. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
