A village in Shimoina County, in the southwestern tip of Nagano Prefecture. Population 1,522 (1995). Occupying the upper reaches of the Neba River, it borders Aichi Prefecture to the south and west and Gifu Prefecture to the northwest. The Sanshu Kaido (National Route 153), which connects Shinano and Mikawa, runs through the village, and in the early modern period, traffic between Nakama was thriving, with wholesalers and other businesses operating there. Located at the southeastern end of the Kiso Mountains, most of the village area is covered by forests and wilderness, with arable land opening up along the Neba River. Spinach, corn, shiitake mushrooms and other crops are cultivated, and cattle and pigs are also raised in abundance. The area around Chausuyama (1,415m) on the border with Aichi Prefecture is a tourist destination that belongs to the Tenryu-Okumikawa Quasi-National Park. 長野県南西端,下伊那郡の村。人口1522(1995)。根羽川の上流域を占め,南と西は愛知県,北西は岐阜県に接する。信濃と三河を結ぶ三州街道(国道153号線)が通じ近世には中馬の往来が盛んで問屋などがあった。木曾山脈南東端にあって村域の大部分は山林・原野で占められ,根羽川沿いに耕地が開ける。ホウレンソウ,トウモロコシ,シイタケなどが栽培され,牛や豚の飼育も盛ん。愛知県境の茶臼山(1415m)一帯は天竜奥三河国定公園に属する観光地。
