A city in central Illinois, USA, facing the Illinois River and Lake Peoria. Population 112,936 (2000). It is the transportation and industrial center of the central region, and an important port of entry. Known as a beer and whiskey town since the mid-19th century, it has seen remarkable development in a variety of industries, including agricultural and civil engineering machinery, chemicals, food, and clothing. Located in the middle of an agricultural region, it is also important as a market and distribution center for agricultural products. It began as an exploration site by the French explorer La Salle in 1680, and became a city in 1845. It is also the location of Bradley College (founded in 1896). It is also famous as the place where Lincoln ran for the Senate in 1858, and spoke out against slavery in a debate with the Democrat Douglas.
