Having learned of hieroglyphs in 1628 through a collection of drawings of Egyptian obelisks, he began his work in 1636 using Coptic as a clue, and published the results of his work as Oedipus in Egypt (1652-54). However, his method of deciphering the hieroglyphs was too heavily based on the mystical linguistic analysis of Kabbalah, and is now considered a misinterpretation, but the direction of his ideas was correct. …
