A general term for crustaceans belonging to the order Amphipoda of the class Malacostraca. They are also called amphipods (→ amphipods). Generally, they are 0.5-2cm long, but some species are known to be over 20cm long. Their bodies are laterally compressed and consist of a head, seven thoracic segments, and six abdominal segments. Their habits are diverse and there is considerable variation in morphology, but they generally have two pairs of antennae, one pair of compound eyes, seven pairs of thoracic legs, and three pairs of abdominal limbs. The first and second thoracic legs are called maxillopods and have a scissor-like structure. There are approximately 5,600 known species in the world, divided into nearly 100 families. Most are marine, but there are also about 100 species that live on land, and they live in wetlands, rivers, lakes, and groundwater.
