Other-power-based reliance

Other power refers to the power (working) of the Buddha's absolute compassion (jihi) that transcends the self, and original vow refers to the Buddha's vow to promise the salvation of all living beings. When written in compound characters as other power hongan, it means that the original vow is other power, and other power is the original vow (power). This word is used as an important basic term that shows the teachings of Shin Buddhism, but the more common term is hongan tariki. Shinran defined "other power is the power of original vow," making it clear that the salvation of all living beings is achieved through this. Today, other power hongan is often used to mean relying on the power of others without making any effort, but this is a complete misuse of the term.

他力とは自己を超えた絶対的な仏の慈悲(じひ)の力（働き）、本願とは一切衆生(いっさいしゅじょう)の救済を約束する仏の願いをさす。他力本願と熟字するときは、他力である本願ということで、他力がすなわち本願（力）である。このことばは真宗の教えを示す重要な基本用語として用いられるが、本願他力というのが一般である。親鸞(しんらん)は「他力とは本願力なり」と規定し、一切衆生の救済はこれによって成立することを明らかにした。現今、なにも努力しないで他人の力に頼ることを他力本願といっている場合がみられるが、これはまったく誤用である。
