A general term for semiconductor rectifiers that can control the conduction or blocking of current. It was named after the fact that it works similarly to a thyratron. A typical example is the silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR), which is an inverse element three-terminal thyristor with a pnpn structure, with a gate electrode on a p-type or n-type semiconductor layer, and switching is performed by controlling the main current with the gate current. High-power thyristors with a blocking voltage of 2500 volts and an average current of about 500 amperes are also manufactured. In addition to being used in rectifiers, inverters, converters, etc., they are widely used as various switching elements in dimmers for fluorescent lights, motor (rotation speed) control for electric fans, automatic control, frequency conversion (50 Hz to 60 Hz, etc.), computers, etc. Turn-off thyristors (GTO thyristors), which can be controlled by drawing current in the opposite direction from the gate, and photothyristors, which can be turned on by light, have also been developed and are used in high-power devices.

電流の導通または阻止を制御することができる半導体整流素子の総称。サイラトロンに似た働きをするという意から命名されたもの。代表的なものであるシリコン制御整流素子（SCR）は，p-n-p-n構造をもった，逆素子３端子サイリスターで，p形あるいはn形半導体の層にゲート電極があり，ゲート電流により主電流を制御することでスイッチング動作が行われる。阻止電圧2500ボルト，平均電流500アンペア程度の大電力用のものも作られている。整流器，インバーター，コンバーター等に用いられるほか，各種のスイッチ素子として，蛍光灯などの調光装置，扇風機等の電動機（回転速度）制御，自動制御，周波数変換（50Hzを60Hzになど），計算機等に広く利用される。また，ゲートから逆に電流を引き出すことによって，オン・オフの制御ができるターンオフサイリスター（GTOサイリスター），光によってターンオンできる光サイリスターも開発され，大電力装置に使用されている。
