Stone slab
〘Noun〙 (also "sekihan") A printing method in which a picture is drawn on the surface of a lithographic stone with a fatty material, and then printed with oil-based ink, taking advantage of the repulsive properties of the water and fat. Invented by the German Senefelder in 1798. A representative example of lithographic printing. In a broader sense, it also includes printing methods that use metal plates instead of lithographic stones (metal lithography). Lithograph. In 1860, a Prussian envoy presented a lithographic printing press to the shogunate.

〘名〙 (「せきはん」とも) 石版石の表面に脂肪性の材料で図を描き、水と脂肪の反発性を利用して、油性インクで刷る印刷法。一七九八年、ドイツのゼーネフェルダーが発明。平版印刷の代表的なもの。広義には、石版石のかわりに金属板を用いる印刷法(金属平版)をも含む。リトグラフ。〔和蘭字彙(1855‐58)〕※明暗(1916)〈夏目漱石〉八九「石版(セキバン)で印刷されている広告用の小冊子めいたもの」[語誌]近世後期に日本に紹介され、川原慶賀や歌川国芳らがヨーロッパの石版画を模写したことが知られている。一八六〇年にプロシア使節が石版印刷機を幕府に献上した。
