The capital of Malaysia. It is located in the mid-west of the Malay Peninsula, about 30 km inland from the coast. It was also the capital of Selangor state until it became a federal territory in 1974 (currently Shah Alam in the western suburbs is the capital). The city has an area of 243 km2. Nearly half of the population of 1,145,000 (1991) is Chinese, with a particularly large proportion of Cantonese. Together with the surrounding cities it forms the country's largest metropolitan area. In recent years, the influx of Malays has been increasing. The town was founded in the 1850s when Chinese immigrants established a settlement at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers as a base for tin mining development, and Kuala Lumpur means "the confluence of muddy rivers."
