French baritone. Born in Geneva. Studied at the Paris Conservatory and made his debut in 1919. He initially achieved success with French operas such as "Werther" and "Pelléas et Mélisande", but later became known as a leading interpreter of French songs, including those by Fauré, and his sweet, soft voice and lustrous, taut, beautiful vocal expression captivated many. In his later years, he trained many vocalists as a professor at his alma mater. [Yoshio Miyama] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
