A large perennial plant of the Malvaceae family, native to China. It is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant in gardens around the world. The stems are cylindrical and hairy, reaching a height of 2m. The alternate leaves are circular with a heart-shaped base, usually with 5 to 7 shallow lobes, serrated edges, and long petioles. There are many horticultural varieties with flower colors such as red, deep red, pale pink, white, and purple, and some have double flowers. Since ancient times, most of the plants simply called 'Aoi' have been this hollyhock, and the Japanese name comes from the upright flower stalk. The roots are called 'Shokki' roots, and the flowers are called 'Shokki' flowers, and are used medicinally.
