…Poison is obtained from various plants, but the most common are several species of Strychnos (Machinaceae), whose bark is thoroughly boiled and then simmered to produce curare. Other species, such as Chondrodendron , Abuta , and Telitoxicum (Menispermaceae), and plants of the Nectandra genus (Lauraceae) are also used as arrow poisons. Those from the Orinoco River basin are called pot-curare, which is derived mainly from Strychnos plants, those from Brazil are called tube-curare, which is derived mainly from Menispermaceae plants, and those from Guiana and Colombia are called calabash-curare, which is derived mainly from Strychnos plants. …

…毒を得る基源植物はいろいろであるが，もっとも代表的なものはマチン科ストリクノス属Strychnosの数種で，樹皮をよく煮たあとの煮つめた煮汁がクラーレである。また，ツヅラフジ科のバリエラChondrodendron，アブータAbuta，テリトキシクムTelitoxicumなどの諸属や，クスノキ科のネクタンドラ属Nectandraの植物も同様に矢毒として利用される。オリノコ川流域産のものはつぼクラーレpot‐curareと呼ばれ，主としてストリクノス属植物から，ブラジル産のものは竹筒クラーレtube‐curareと呼ばれ，主としてツヅラフジ科植物から，またギアナ産，コロンビア産のものはヒョウタンクラーレcalabash‐curareと呼ばれ，ストリクノス属植物から得られたものとされている。…
