…The clarity of a photographic image is expressed as its sharpness. Graininess and sharpness are important factors that affect image quality, and graininess and sharpness are collectively called image structure.

A photographic image is made up of minute silver particles produced by development, but the graininess observed when a photographic image is enlarged is not the result of individual developed silver particles, but rather the result of developed silver particles dispersed throughout the photographic layer overlapping one another.
