However, in the early modern period, the seven kinds of powders, mung beans, talc, white bean nut, white radish, sandalwood, scutellaria, and borneol, were powdered and commercialized as "skin-cleaning powder tamahada powder," as described in the "Joyo Kinmou Zui" (1687) which states, "If you apply this to your body while bathing, it will give your body a lustrous look, make your skin smooth and soft, and be effective against rashes, acne, and dusky skin." From the middle of the Meiji period, Western-style washing powders such as starch, soap, borax, and baking soda were also commercialized, as well as nightingale droppings, which have a skin-whitening effect, and washing powder was one of the most popular cosmetics until before World War II. ...
