An ideological movement that sought solidarity and unity among all Slavic-speaking nations. The movement first arose in the early 19th century with the national awakening of the West and South Slavic peoples. These small Slavic nations, under the rule of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Turkey, stressed their common linguistic and racial ties. The first Pan-Slavic thinkers came from Czechoslovakia and Slovakia. They held the first Pan-Slavic Congress in Prague in 1848, which aimed to improve the status of the Slavic-speaking peoples under the rule of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
