1899‐1965 French playwright. He started out as a journalist, and wrote a collection of poems, The Race of Men (1937), and a novel, Abraxas (1938), but he never achieved fame as a playwright. He made his debut in the theater world in 1946 with Coat-Coat-Coat. His fame was solidified when he produced Evil Run, which won the 1947 youth theater competition directed by director Vitali. In 1962, a scandal broke out when the Comédie-Française staged The Body Rests. His style, influenced by surrealism, includes Black Festival (1949), The Maiden (1950), A Knight Alone and The Glapion Effect (both 1959), and he freely uses musical verse that can sometimes seem verbose, mixing humor and fantasy to create some of the most creative language in modern theater.
