1883‐1971 American biochemist. Born in New York. After graduating from the University of Michigan in 1905, he began conducting physiological and chemical research on proteins and amino acids at the Rockefeller Medical Institute in 1907. During that time, he studied abroad at the University of Berlin in 1911, and became head of chemistry at the Rockefeller Medical Institute Hospital in 1914. He earned degrees from universities such as Yale, Ohio State, Northwestern University, and Chicago. In 1951, he became a research chemist in the medical department of Brookhaven National Laboratory. His main achievements include elucidating the chemical roles of proteins and their derivatives in the physiology and pathology of proteins, and establishing research methods such as the Van Slyke method for quantifying amino groups, as well as gases in blood and electrolysis.
