Donald Dexter van Slyke

American biochemist. Born in New York. After graduating from the University of Michigan in 1905, he began conducting physiological and chemical research on proteins and amino acids at the Rockefeller Medical Institute in 1907. During that time, he studied abroad at the University of Berlin in 1911, and became head of chemistry at the Rockefeller Medical Institute Hospital in 1914. He earned degrees from universities such as Yale, Ohio State, Northwestern University, and Chicago. In 1951, he became a research chemist in the medical department of Brookhaven National Laboratory. His main achievements include elucidating the chemical roles of proteins and their derivatives in the physiology and pathology of proteins, and establishing research methods such as the Van Slyke method for quantifying amino groups, as well as gases in blood and electrolysis.

アメリカの生化学者。ニューヨークに生まれる。1905年ミシガン大学を卒業後，07年以来，ロックフェラー医学研究所でタンパク質やアミノ酸の生理学的および化学的研究を進める。その間，11年ベルリン大学に留学し，14年ロックフェラー医学研究所病院の化学主任となる。イェール，オハイオ，ノースウェスタン，シカゴなどの大学の学位を獲得した。51年ブルックヘブン国立研究所の医学部門の化学研究員となる。おもな業績は，タンパク質およびその誘導体の生理学および病理学の化学的役割を明らかにし，アミノ基の定量法であるバン･スライク法をはじめ，血液中の気体や電解などの研究方法を確立したことである。
