Bulgarian politician. He participated in the April Uprising of 1876, and after the establishment of the autonomous principality in 1878, he became a member of the Liberal Party. He participated in the annexation of Eastern Rumelia and the war against Serbia. He reversed the military coup of 1886, and after Prince Alexander abdicated, he became prime minister, ruling as an anti-Russian dictator from 1887 to 1894. In domestic affairs, he adopted economic policies that emphasized the development of commerce and industry, and in foreign affairs, he promoted a pro-Austrian and pro-British course. He was assassinated by his opponents in July 1895. [Imai Junko]

ブルガリアの政治家。1876年の四月蜂起に参加し78年の自治公国成立後は自由党員。東ルーメリアの併合や対セルビア戦争に参加。86年の軍事クーデタを逆転させ，アレクサンダル公退位後は首相となり，87‐94年反ロシア的な独裁政治を行った。内政では商工業の発達を重視した経済政策をとり，外交では親オーストリア，親イギリス路線を推し進めた。95年7月，反対派により暗殺された。【今井淳子】
