The first popular national liberation movement in Indonesia. It was called Sarekat Islam. It started in Surakarta, Central Java in 1911, and local organizations were rapidly formed all over Indonesia. At first it had a strong character as a mutual aid organization, but soon it came to represent the socio-economic interests of the people broadly, such as resolving their grievances and promoting the establishment of cooperatives, and from around 1916 it also became active in politics. The central leadership and some of the local organizations were led by independent intellectuals such as Tjokroaminoto, who were of aristocratic origin and had received a Western education, but overall it was a gathering of local organizations of various characteristics, and three values coexisted: Western modern progress, indigenous mutual aid, and Islam.

インドネシアで最初の大衆的民族解放運動団体。サレカト･イスラムSarekat Islamと呼ばれる。1911年中部ジャワのスラカルタに始まり，急速にインドネシア各地に地方組織が形成された。当初は相互扶助団体の性格が強かったが，間もなく人民の不平不満の解決や協同組合設立の促進など，広く人民の社会経済的利益を代表するようになり，16年ころからは活発な政治活動も行うようになった。中央指導部や一部の地方組織はチョクロアミノトなど貴族出自で洋式教育を受けた在野の知識人に指導されたが，全体としてはさまざまな性格の地方組織の寄合世帯で，西洋近代的進歩，土着的相互扶助，イスラムの三つの価値観が並立していた。
