American female dancer. Born in San Francisco. She disliked traditional ballet and idealized Greek dance, wearing flowing Greek-style tunic costumes and dancing barefoot instead of toe shoes, with free and improvised movements. She is also said to be the founder of modern dance. She made her debut in New York in 1896, and gave recitals in London, Paris and other parts of Europe from the following year, 1897. She also performed in Russia, which had an impact on the ballet world and inspired Fokine to create Les Sylphides. She established dance schools in Berlin and Paris, as well as in Moscow after the revolution, and devoted herself to education. She was known for her free-spirited lifestyle and her unrestrained romantic history, especially her relationship with the Russian poet Yesenin. 米国の女性舞踊家。サンフランシスコに生まれる。因襲的なバレエを嫌い，ギリシアの舞踊を理想としてギリシア風のなだらかなチュニックの衣装とトー・シューズなどの靴をはかずに裸足で，即興的に自由な動きで踊った。モダン・ダンスの創始者ともいわれる。1896年ニューヨークにデビュー，翌1897年からロンドンやパリなどヨーロッパ各地でリサイタルを行った。ロシアでも公演し，バレエ界にも影響を与え，フォーキンが《レ・シルフィード》を作るきっかけにもなった。ベルリンやパリ，また革命後のモスクワなどに舞踊学校を設立し，教育にも尽くした。その自由な生き方とともに奔放な恋愛遍歴も知られ，特にロシアの詩人エセーニンとの恋は有名。首に巻いたショールが自動車の車輪に巻き込まれる事故で，衝撃的な死を遂げた。著書に《わが生涯》など。→ルビンシテイン
