They are indigenous people who live in many cold mountain villages in the central-western Mexican state of Michoacán, and are notable for having no linguistic relationship with other indigenous groups in Mexico. Most of the population of about 110,000 also speak Spanish. Until they were conquered by the Spanish in 1522, the Tarasco Kingdom had not succumbed to attacks by the Aztec Empire, and extended its influence west of the Balsa River to the present-day states of Jalisco, Queretaro, and Guanajuato. In 1537, V. de Quiroga became the first bishop of this region, and is famous for attempting to build a utopia based on the ideas of Erasmus.
