A general term for reactions involving organomagnesium compounds represented by RMgX (R is an organic atomic group such as an alkyl group or a phenyl group, and X is Cl, Br, or I). This reaction involves organometallic compounds and was developed in 1901 by FAV Grignard of France. When metallic magnesium is reacted with an alkyl halide in a dry ether solvent, a Grignard reagent is obtained in high yield. There is much discussion regarding the state of existence of the reagent obtained in this way, and depending on the solvent, it may form a complex with the solvent or exist as a dimer.
