A witch from Greek legend. Daughter of Aeetes, King of Colchis, and niece of Circe. Divorced by Jason, who was about to marry the daughter of the King of Corinth, she killed the king and his daughter, as well as the two children she had with Jason, then fled to Aegeus, King of Athens, married him, and attempted to poison Theseus. Her child, Medos, is said to be the eponymous ancestor of the Medes (Persians). She has provided subject matter for literature and art since ancient times, including the tragedy of the same name by Euripides. In recent years, a film about her directed by Pasolini and starring Maria Callas has also become famous.

ギリシア伝説の魔女。コルキス王アイエテスの娘でキルケの姪。コリントス王の娘と結婚しようとしたイアソンに離婚され，王と娘，さらにイアソンと自分との間にできた２人の子も殺し，アテナイ王アイゲウスのもとにのがれ，彼と結婚，テセウスの毒殺を図った。その子メドスはメディア（ペルシア）人の名祖になったという。エウリピデスの同名の悲劇をはじめ，古来，文学・美術に題材を提供している。近年ではパゾリーニ監督，マリア・カラス主演の映画も有名。
