Ibayashi

Japanese: 居囃子 - いばやし

〘 noun 〙 A form of Noh performance. It is mainly the latter part of a piece, sung without dancing and accompanied by musical accompaniment. The singer sits diagonally to the right of the stage, and the musicians are in the same positions as in formal Noh performances, but they play both the large drum (Otsuzumi) and the small drum (Kodomo) while sitting upright. ※Fuzoku Gaho - Issue 50 (1893) Jinjimon "I don't think that the dedicated Ihayashi (musician playing in a dwelling) is the work of a woman"

〘名〙能の演奏形式の一つ。主として一曲中の後半部分を、舞なしで囃子を入れて謡うもの。謡い手は舞台の右手に斜めに坐し、囃子方は正式の能のときと同じ位置だが、大鼓(おおつづみ)、小鼓ともに正坐して打つ。※風俗画報‐五〇号（1893）人事門「奉納の居囃子(ヰハヤシ)女業とは思われぬ」
