Sabellius

Sabellianism was a heresy (along with Arius) that was associated with the Trinity in the ancient Christian Church around 260. His background is unknown, but he came from Africa during the reign of Callistus I of Rome (reigned 217-222) and fought against Church Father Hippolytus. His theory was modalism, which considered the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit to be modes of divine manifestation. However, because he neglected the distinction between the persons, he was criticized for becoming patripassianism, which considered the incarnation of the Son (Christ) to be the suffering of the Father.

三位一体をめぐる古代キリスト教会の論争の中で，アリウスとならんで異端説(サベリウス主義Sabellianism)を主張した人。経歴は不詳だが，ローマの司教カリストゥス1世(在位217‐222)のときにアフリカから来て，教父ヒッポリュトスと争った。その主張は〈様態論modalism〉(モナルキアニズム)で，父･子･聖霊を神の顕現様態とするものであったが，位格相互の区別を軽視したために，それは子(キリスト)の受肉を父の受難とする〈天父受難説patripassianism〉となるのではないかと非難された。
