Bhamo (English spelling)

Administrative center of Bhamo Township, Kachin State, northern Myanmar. Located about 280 km north-northeast of Mandalay, it is the center of the Bhamo Basin on the Ayeyarwady River. It has long been an important trading and military location connecting China's Yunnan Province in the east with Mandalay in the south. It was called Banmu in China and was the site of many fierce battles during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. It is the final stop on the Ayeyarwady River for small steamboats. The inhabitants are Kachin, Burmese and Shan. Rice and coffee are cultivated in the surrounding area. Population: 78,183 (1983).

ミャンマー北部，カチン州，バモー郡の行政中心地。マンダレーの北北東約 280kmに位置し，エイヤーワディ川に面するバモー盆地の中心地。古くから東方の中国ユンナン (雲南) 省と南方のマンダレーを結ぶ交易，軍事上の要地であった。中国では蛮暮と呼ばれ，元，明，清時代にはたびたび激戦の地となった。小蒸気船のエイヤーワディ川遡航最終点。住民はカチン族，ビルマ人，シャン族から成る。付近ではイネ，コーヒー栽培が行われている。人口7万 8183 (1983) 。
