Administrative center of Bhamo Township, Kachin State, northern Myanmar. Located about 280 km north-northeast of Mandalay, it is the center of the Bhamo Basin on the Ayeyarwady River. It has long been an important trading and military location connecting China's Yunnan Province in the east with Mandalay in the south. It was called Banmu in China and was the site of many fierce battles during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. It is the final stop on the Ayeyarwady River for small steamboats. The inhabitants are Kachin, Burmese and Shan. Rice and coffee are cultivated in the surrounding area. Population: 78,183 (1983).
