A marine fish of the order Anguilliformes and family Porgidae (illustration). It has local names such as Hamu (Hiroshima, Kochi). It is common in central and southern Honshu, especially in the Seto Inland Sea, Shikoku, and Kyushu, but is also widely distributed in the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan, East Indies, Indian Ocean, and Red Sea. In Hokkaido and the Tohoku region, the Japanese conger eel (illustration) is what is called Hamo. Its body is long and cylindrical, with a laterally compressed tail. Its snout protrudes and mouth is large, with several rows of sharp teeth on both the upper and lower jaws, and the vomer in the palate also has powerful teeth.

ウナギ目ハモ科の海産魚(イラスト)。ハム(広島,高知)などの地方名がある。本州中部以南,とくに瀬戸内海,四国,九州に多いが,さらに朝鮮半島,台湾,東インド諸島,インド洋,紅海にわたって広く分布する。北海道,東北地方でハモと呼んでいるのはマアナゴ(イラスト)のことである。体は円筒形で長く,尾部は側扁する。吻(ふん)は突出し,口も大きく,上下両あごに数列の鋭い歯があり,口蓋部の鋤骨(じよこつ)にも強大な歯がある。
