...In addition, pine forests planted since the late 19th century have spread across the sandy plains inland, but this region is especially famous for the red wine produced on the terraces along the Gironde Bay. In particular, the Haut-Médoc region, located upstream near Bordeaux, is dotted with chateaux that produce the finest red wine, such as Margaux, Beychevelle, Latour, Mouton-Rothschild, and Lafite, centered around the towns of Margaux, Pauillac, and Saint-Estèphe. Due to the region's topography, the pine forests block the western winds from the Atlantic, the abundant flow of the Gironde River softens the cold, and the poor, calcareous, gravelly soil absorbs and radiates solar heat well, so although the yield is low, it produces very good quality grapes.
