Son of Lothar I, King of Lotharingia (Lorthringen). Reigned 855-869. From the beginning, the kingdom of Lotharingia was subject to the expansionist ambitions of Lothar II's two uncles, Charles II and Louis II, and after Lothar's death in 869, it was divided between the two uncles by the Treaty of Mersen, which ignored the succession rights of Lothar's eldest brother, Louis II, King of Provence in Italy.
