This jellyfish belongs to the phylum Coelenterata, class Scyphomedusa, order Cubic Jellyfish, family Acanthomedusae. The umbrella is almost cubic and lantern-shaped. It is about 3-3.5 cm high and 2.5-3 cm wide, with four pale pink tentacles, the base of which forms a leaf-like foot made of agar. This species is generally tropical, but can be found in Japan in the summer along the coasts from the west coast of Hokkaido to Okinawa. The nematocyst venom is quite strong and can be quite painful to touch. At night, when fishermen use lights to catch shrimp, these jellyfish gather around the lights, which can sometimes interfere with shrimp fishing. In Otaru, Hokkaido, it is sometimes called Takoteren, and in other parts of Honshu, it is sometimes called Ira.
