This field studies and builds mechanical systems that are safe, reliable, and convenient for human use, by understanding the system that includes the user and the machine, while having a thorough understanding of human perception, cognition, and behavior. If we think of the interface as the interaction between humans and the outside world, it is a concept that covers not only machines and humans, but also all fields, such as the design of everyday living spaces. There are two types of human interface: hardware technology and software technology, but it is impossible to think of these technologies separately. Software technology that maintains a good interface between computers and users is called useware.

人間が使用するのに必要な安全性，信頼性，利便性などをもった機械システムを，人間の知覚，認知，行動を熟知したうえで，利用者と機械を含んだ系をシステム的にとらえて構築・研究する分野。インターフェースを人間と外界との相互作用と考えると，機械と人間だけでなく，日常の生活空間の設計などあらゆる分野にわたる考えである。なお，ヒューマンインターフェースには，ハードウェア技術とソフトウェア技術の二つが存在するが，これらの技術を分離して考えることは不可能である。コンピュータとユーザーとの良好なインターフェースを保つためのソフトウェア技術をユーズウェアと呼ぶ。
