Violinist. Born in Tokyo. Studied under Anna Ono from the age of five, and won first place in a music competition at age eleven. Active as a soloist since 1939 (Showa 14). Professor at the Tokyo Music School from 1946 to 1950 (Showa 21 to 25). In 1952, won the Mainichi Music Award for his performance of Sibelius's Concerto as a guest with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. He also studied chamber music under Hideo Saito, and in 1964 founded the Iwamoto Mari String Quartet, which held regular concerts and worked to popularize and develop chamber music. The quartet received the Minister of Education's Art Encouragement Prize in 1972 and the Suntory Special Prize in 1979.
