Mari Iwamoto

Violinist. Born in Tokyo. Studied under Anna Ono from the age of five, and won first place in a music competition at age eleven. Active as a soloist since 1939 (Showa 14). Professor at the Tokyo Music School from 1946 to 1950 (Showa 21 to 25). In 1952, won the Mainichi Music Award for his performance of Sibelius's Concerto as a guest with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. He also studied chamber music under Hideo Saito, and in 1964 founded the Iwamoto Mari String Quartet, which held regular concerts and worked to popularize and develop chamber music. The quartet received the Minister of Education's Art Encouragement Prize in 1972 and the Suntory Special Prize in 1979.

バイオリン奏者。東京生まれ。5歳より小野アンナに師事し、11歳で音楽コンクール第1位に入賞。1939年（昭和14）以後、独奏者として活躍。46～50年（昭和21～25）東京音楽学校教授。52年、東京交響楽団に客演した際のシベリウスの協奏曲の演奏により毎日音楽賞受賞。また室内楽を斎藤秀雄に学び、64年「巌本真理弦楽四重奏団」を発足させて定期演奏会を重ね、室内楽の普及・発展に努めた。同団は72年芸術選奨文部大臣賞、79年サントリー特別賞などを受賞した。
