A valley on the outskirts of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. When Nazi Germany entered Kiev on September 19, 1941 during World War II, it began its policy of exterminating the Jews. On the 29th and 30th of that month, SS special forces shot 33,771 Jewish men and women who had been gathered in this valley. During the two-year occupation of Kiev by the German army, more than 100,000 Jews were buried in the valley. It is estimated that about 3 million Jews were victims of the extermination policy in the Soviet Union under German occupation, and Babi Yar has come to symbolize this.
