An election held in the Roman Catholic Church to choose a new pope. Until the 11th century, the pope was elected by the clergy and lay people. However, in 1059, in response to the interference of secular princes, princes, and nobles in the appointment of popes and in elections, the right to vote for the pope was limited to cardinals. In 1179, a two-thirds majority system was established. At the Council of Lyon in 1274, Pope Gregory X established a system in which voters were confined to a sealed chamber (conclave) to prevent outside interference and delays in the voting process, and since then, the term conclave has become synonymous with the college of cardinals that elects the pope.
