...A city in the mid-west of Fukuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1972. Its population was 50,612 (1995). It borders Kurume City to the south and Tosu City in Saga Prefecture to the west, and is long from north to south, occupying the Homan River basin, a tributary of the Chikugo River. The northern half is a gently undulating alluvial plateau with many fields, while the southern half is a humid rice paddy area where Japanese schistosomiasis was once prevalent. The Amagi Railway Line runs through the city, and the Nishitetsu Omuta Line runs through it, and nearby is Tosu Junction, where the Kyushu Expressway and the Nagasaki-Oita Expressway intersect. It used to be a rural area where vegetable cultivation, poultry farming, and pig farming were thriving, but in 1953 a new Ground Self-Defense Force garrison was established, and since the 1960s the number of houses has increased dramatically, turning it into a satellite city of Fukuoka City. Construction is also underway on the Nakakyushu (Ogori/Chikushino) New Town (8,000 homes), the largest in Kyushu (approximately 700 hectares) that will straddle Chikushino City to the north. *Some of the terminology used in reference to "Ogori-Chikushino New Town" is listed below.
